hello, yellow.

in between various other projects, i have found a little time to make some new treasures. i didn't realize it at the time, but most of them are yellow. yellow is happy. and so am i. these will be available in my etsy store soon!

yellow seersucker bow band.
(made from one of my favorite dresses that got ripped to shreds in the washing machine. it was a sad, sad time, but i like to think i've turned those lemons into lemonade.)

red and mustard yellow felt flower band.
this is the second one i've made like this, with stitched felt petals. it's a cute little guy.

yellow seersucker ruffle band.
(also made from my beloved ex-dress.)

yellow tulle & tan feathers band.
i bought some white tulle the other day to work on a wedding piece, and this yellow stole my heart. the colors in the tulle and feathers match the vintage earring exactly. weird! and perfect!

that's all for now. i'm hoping to do a craft show sometime soon since i've been able to build up my stock a little bit, but i'm not sure what's available. i think i'm going to apply for the hamilton county marketplace in march, but the february one is full. any ideas?

my handmade baby shower gifts.

today i attended a baby shower for my friend kristina. i work with kristina at eagle creek, and she is one of the sweetest, kindest people i have ever met. all the girls from the shop (and a few regulars!) gathered tonight to celebrate kristina and her baby boy, who's due in just six weeks.

kristina recently asked me to make new covers for her rocking chair cushions. they go on a rocking chair in her baby's room. it was my first attempt at cushion covers, and i think they turned out pretty well. i gave them to her today as a shower gift (also: some really cute bibs including one with hedgehogs on it. yes, hedgehogs). i thought about documenting the creation process, but i just have photos of the finished product.

the whole thing:
there are three separate pieces -- a seat cushion, back cushion, and head pillow.

a little bit of a close-up:
i attached ties to the top corners of the back cushion so it will be secure on the rocking chair.

the ties:
believe it or not, this was one of the trickiest parts of this entire project.

a pillow close-up:
the head pillow is attached to the back cushion with velcro. i used velcro on all three cushions so that each part of the cover would be removable in case they need to be washed.

velcro on the seat cushion:
i decided to go with velcro instead of zippers because it's been probably 12 or 13 years since i've attempted a zipper, and i didn't want to mess it up.

velcro on the bottom of the back cushion:
this part is completely hidden behind the seat cushion in the chair.

i was also inspired to add a little more tarabee-ness to my gift wrap. the theme for kristina's baby's room is a vintage airplane / travel theme, so i decided to go with that. here's what i came up with:

all bagged up:
this is the finished product. i made the plane out of felt leftovers and attached a card made from brown paper and a felt heart. (and i used my new typewriter to type the message inside!)

airplane close-up:
i drew and cut out the plane first, then added the blue decorations and red flight tail. i used hot glue to stick it to the bag.

my next project is to make curtains from the same fabric that the rocking chair cushions are made of. i've made plenty of curtains, but i've never made a valance. i have some ideas to make it look a little more professional than some i've made in the past. i can't wait until they're finished. maybe i'll get to see the baby's room sometime soon, too!

etsy store & venue updates.

ah! i have been so busy the past few days, but i just added a few new items to my etsy store. these are some of my favorite headbands, so i'm glad they're available now!

also, hair treasures had some success at the sullivan munce cultural center's holiday artisans boutique, and some of my headbands are still there for ongoing sale. i'm really excited to have hair treasures stay in such a wonderful venue (zionsville, IN)!

i am going to submit some more pieces for the gallery's newest exhibit that will feature beading in fashion and handmade accessories. here's some info about it:

my grandparents' house.

today i drove north with my family to have "christmas" with my grandparents (my dad's parents). they live in a small amish town in northern indiana called nappanee where i used to live until i was ten years old. we don't get to see them very much, but every time i see them, i appreciate new and special things about them.

my grandparents have lived in the same house as long as i have been alive. my grandma has always had the house decorated with antiques, handmade goods, unique wallpaper, and vintage trinkets. i think i get my appreciation for vintage and handmade items from my grandma cate. she is the one who taught me how to sew and has always encouraged me to be crafty.

today while the rest of my family was chatting, i was walking around my grandparents' house with my phone, taking pictures of a few of my favorite areas of home decor. i know phone pictures aren't the best quality, but it's all i had at the time.

dishes and a handmade doily on a hutch in the dining room. my grandma calls these little circles "yoyos," and she told me today that they are made from her old school dresses.

a hanging birdcage, paintings, framed antique dishes, wall stencil border, and a shelf that goes around the entire dining room. the stencil border is a perfect example of my grandma's appreciation for detail.

plaid wallpaper, old tools, a wooden clock, and an antique cabinet in the laundry room.

more of the wall stencil and more old dishes and trays on the wall and shelf in the dining room.

a wooden shingle wall, family photos, organ, handmade doily, and antique plates in the living room. (more stencil border, too!)

today my grandpa referred to this as "the stove." it's an old wood burning fireplace on a beautiful brick wall.

a handmade tablecloth and doily on an end table in the living room. i wish you could see the wooden shutter in the background. the wooden shutters are my favorite!

more of the wooden shingle wall, an antique telephone, family photos, an antique tea set, and a doily on a wooden hutch in the living room.

amazing navy blue calico wallpaper (on the wall and ceiling!), a shelf of antique dishes, a mirror, and old-fashioned radio in the breakfast room.

i love this so much! my grandma made this faux curtain for their bed. the oval frames are pictures of my dad and two uncles. i love this collage that she made inside the curtains. the pillows are handmade, too.

this is my grandma's bathroom. she has some really beautiful antique paper dolls framed on the walls and some more calico wallpaper. i used to use this bathroom as much as possible just to stare at the paper dolls, perfume atomizer, and little glass bottles and dishes.

an old hutch with handmade curtains where glass used to be. the curtains are handmade, as well. (more stencil border, too, and another doily.)

there is an entire upstairs in my grandparents' house, which is arguably the cutest room i have ever seen. their garage also has so many vintage signs and decorations, just like the rest of the house. i could spend days and days going through all of the things they have in their house and just as long listening to the stories behind each item.

i spent some time showing my hair treasures portfolio to my grandma. she looked carefully at every page, commenting on each piece. i love that we have that connection.

oh, one more thing. just to prove that my grandma is the cutest lady in the world:

every time we come to visit, she cooks a meal and gives us each a place setting. she used pine cones this time. we all had sweet calico place mats and gingham fabric napkins, too. she is so organized and thoughtful -- i noticed a handwritten menu when we arrived! i hope that i acquire more of her organizational qualities as i grow older. ha.

bye bye, christmas.

and now for a post-christmas christmas post. (see what i did there?)

i had a great time in chattanooga with my extended family. it was hard to be there without mema, but we were able to carry on and also start some new traditions in her honor. twenty-something people in one house for four days sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, but it was a cozy, funny time that i will always remember.

the view from our mountain abode:

and another:

one hundred stockings, hung with care. (my brother, sister, and i have the super cool bear stockings. i hope to never retire the bender bears.)

christmas sockies!

i missed gretta severely over the five days we were gone. luckily, santa knew how to make me feel all better.

i had to include a photo our air mattress sleeping arrangements. it's sort of like a christmas dorm room. inside these walls remain many untold secrets of the bender family.

it's hard to believe that christmas has already come and gone. i'm thankful for the time we were able to spend together, and i am already looking forward to next year.

** i will have some hair treasures updates soon. i am working on lining up at least one craft show per month, so i will be a busy little bee here pretty soon with lots of new treasures. feels like it's been a while! **
